Offices are on the way out. Not too long and it won't be the cool thing to do anymore. The thing that bothers me is that people just go to the office and for the sake of going to the office. Coffee gets consumed and nothing really gets done, but damnit you're at the office so it has to count for something, right?

I hadn't seen the double rainbow video until now. My sides are hurting right now.

I think you guys raise a lot of great points about some of the downsides of working in a physical office. Unfortunately, you are right that people rationalize the reasons for having an office. A place to bring customers, face to face interaction, controlled productivity – all of it borders on pure BS most of the time. I'm sure there are valid reasons, but I've found it's often due to a nearly co-dependent corporate mindset (same mindset that abuses meetings, IMO).

Jason Fried raised a great point in Rework regarding companies that continue to rely on brick and mortar offices limiting themselves from having the best employees and at best only have the best players within a defined radius of their office building. It IS a crutch. There is nothing that says people are productive because they sat at a desk all day…and there's no way to monitor them and stay productive yourself.

GAAAHHHH!!!! I can't wait to leave my desk behind. Which reminds me, I know a guy who specializes in Business Intelligence and Entrepreneurial Marketing if you're looking for someone.
